How to install a lace wig
1. Prepare Your Natural Hair:
- Flatten Hair: Braid or twist your natural hair into cornrows or a flat bun. Use a wig cap to secure hair tightly against your scalp, ensuring a smooth base.
- Use Products: Apply gel or mousse to lay down edges and baby hairs. Secure with bobby pins if needed.
2. Prep Your Scalp:
- Clean Skin: Wipe your hairline and forehead with alcohol wipes to remove oils, ensuring better adhesive grip.
- Protect Skin: Apply a barrier cream (e.g., scalp protector) to prevent irritation from adhesives.
3. Prepare the Wig:
- Trim Excess Lace: Cut excess lace around the edges, leaving a 1/4-inch margin. Avoid cutting too close to prevent fraying.
- Customize Hairline: Use tweezers to pluck hairs along the front for a natural density. Bleach knots (if needed) with a lace bleach kit to reduce visibility.
4. Apply Adhesive:
- Choose Adhesive: Opt for medical-grade glue, tape, or spirit gum. Perform a patch test first.
- Apply: Use a brush to apply a thin layer along your hairline. Let it become tacky (30 sec–1 min). For sensitive skin, use double-sided tape.
5. Position the Wig:
- Align: Start at the front, aligning the wig’s hairline with your natural hairline. Press down firmly, smoothing lace from front to back.
- Secure Sides/Back: Adjust sides and nape, ensuring no wrinkles. Use a blow dryer on low heat to set adhesive.
6. Trim Excess Lace:
- Carefully trim any remaining lace along the hairline with small scissors. Avoid cutting hair strands.
7. Style the Wig:
Heat Styling: If human hair, use heat tools. For synthetic wigs, use low heat or steam. Blend with natural hair using edge control or makeup on the part.
Wig Maintenance
Store: Keep on a wig stand to maintain shape; cover with a net to prevent dust.
Removal: Use adhesive remover or oil (e.g., coconut) to gently lift edges. Avoid pulling to preserve lace.
Clean: Wash wig every 1-2 weeks with sulfate-free shampoo. Rinse adhesives from lace.
